A devastating road accident on National Highway-730 in Uttar Pradesh’s Lakhimpur Kheri district left at least 10 people dead and two others critically injured after a speeding truck collided head-on with a Tata Magic passenger vehicle in the early hours of Saturday, police officials said.

The horrific collision took place between Unchgaon and Bharehta villages under the jurisdiction of Isanagar Police Station on NH-730, a key highway route connecting parts of Uttar Pradesh with neighboring districts.

According to preliminary information, the Tata Magic vehicle was carrying passengers travelling from Lakhimpur towards Sisaiya when a truck coming from the Bahraich side allegedly rammed into it from the front at high speed. The impact of the crash was so severe that the passenger vehicle was badly mangled, trapping several occupants inside.

Police and local residents rushed to the spot soon after the accident and launched rescue operations amid chaotic scenes on the highway. Authorities said many victims died on the spot due to the intensity of the collision, while two critically injured passengers were shifted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment.

Visuals from the accident site showed the Tata Magic almost completely destroyed after the collision, while the truck also sustained major front-end damage. Officials said cranes and cutting equipment were used during rescue efforts to pull victims from the wreckage.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, though preliminary findings indicate overspeeding may have played a major role. Police teams have begun collecting evidence from the site and recording statements from witnesses and survivors.

Road accidents involving overloaded or high-speed commercial vehicles continue to remain a major concern across Uttar Pradesh highways, particularly during late-night and early-morning hours when visibility and traffic monitoring become difficult.

The accident caused major disruption on NH-730 for several hours as rescue teams, ambulances and police personnel worked to clear the damaged vehicles and restore traffic movement. Senior district officials also reached the scene to supervise rescue and relief operations.

Authorities said identification of some victims was underway and families of the deceased were being informed. Further legal action will be taken after completion of the preliminary inquiry and technical inspection of the vehicles involved.

The tragedy has once again highlighted growing concerns over highway safety, reckless driving and enforcement gaps on busy transport routes across the state.
