Delhi court sends NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha to 10-day judicial custody

The court allowed Delhi Police’s plea seeking 10-day judicial custody of Prabir Purkayastha, Amit Chakraborty who are accused of receiving funds from pro-China propaganda sources.

On Tuesday, NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR Head Amit Chakraborty were ordered 10-day judicial custody in a case registered over them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). The duo were presented before Delhi’s Patiala House Court after their 7 day remand finished today.

The court allowed Delhi Police’s plea seeking 10-day judicial custody of Prabir Purkayastha, Amit Chakraborty who are accused of receiving funds from pro-China propaganda sources.

As the hearing began, the court asked NewsClick founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR Head Amit Chakroborty if they are facing any problem in custody to which Prabir responded: “People were nice.” (LiveLaw)

On October 3, the special cell of Delhi Police questioned 46 journalists or contributors of news portal NewsClick, after which the police arrested its founder Prabir Purkayastha and HR Head Amit Chakroborty and booked them under the Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA).

This action by Delhi Police Special Cell came after a report got published in The New York Times that alleged NewsClick of being a part of global network that gets money to spend Chinese propoganda.
