Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) on Sunday announced that it will release the provisional answer key for the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination 2026 soon after the conduct of the examination, marking a major procedural reform aimed at improving transparency and candidate participation.
The announcement was made through an official statement issued by the commission and published by the Press Information Bureau (PIB).
UPSC Chairman Ajay Kumar described the move as “a new beginning” towards greater transparency and timely communication with candidates.
“For the first time, the Union Public Service Commission will release the Provisional Answer Key for the Civil Services Examination,” Ajay Kumar said in the statement. He added that the initiative reflects the Commission’s effort to make the examination process more participative while maintaining its integrity and merit-based framework.
According to UPSC, candidates will be allowed to submit representations regarding the provisional answer key through a dedicated online platform called the “Online Question Paper Representation Portal (QPRep)” available on the UPSC online website.
Candidates can submit objections or representations till May 31, 2026, 6 PM, by indicating the answer they believe to be correct along with a brief explanation and supporting references from three authentic sources.
The Commission stated that all representations received will be examined by teams of subject experts possessing domain-specific knowledge. These experts will review the objections, analyse supporting documents and record their findings before the final answer key is prepared.
Officials said the reform has been introduced in response to a long-standing demand from civil services aspirants seeking greater transparency in the examination system.
The Civil Services Examination conducted by UPSC is one of India’s most competitive recruitment examinations and is used for selection into services including the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), Indian Police Service (IPS) and Indian Foreign Service (IFS).
The new answer key policy is expected to help candidates make an early assessment of their performance and provide an official mechanism for raising objections before results are finalised.
Further operational details regarding the implementation of the system are expected to be made available through UPSC notifications and the official portal.
