India will host the BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on May 14 and 15 as New Delhi intensifies preparations for its 2026 BRICS Chairship amid growing global geopolitical and economic realignments.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, the high-level meeting will be chaired by S. Jaishankar and will bring together Foreign Ministers and Heads of Delegation from BRICS member and partner countries. Delegates participating in the meeting are also expected to call on Narendra Modi during their visit.
The gathering assumes significance as it will be among the first major diplomatic engagements hosted by India after assuming the BRICS Chair for 2026. Officials said the discussions would focus on major global and regional developments, geopolitical tensions, multilateral reforms and expanding cooperation among emerging economies.
During the first day of the meeting, BRICS foreign ministers are expected to exchange views on international developments and issues of mutual concern, including global security, economic stability, trade, energy and strategic cooperation. Diplomatic sources indicated that ongoing conflicts in West Asia, maritime security concerns and reforms of international institutions are likely to feature prominently in discussions.
On the second day, member and partner countries will participate in a special session themed “BRICS@20: Building for Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability.” Another dedicated session will focus on “Reforms of Global Governance and Multilateral System,” reflecting long-standing BRICS demands for greater representation of developing countries in institutions such as the United Nations, World Bank and IMF.
The BRICS grouping — originally comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has expanded in recent years with the inclusion of new member and partner nations, increasing its geopolitical significance and economic influence.
The last BRICS Foreign Ministers’ Meeting was held on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the United Nations General Assembly in September 2025, where India formally assumed the role of incoming BRICS Chair for 2026.
Officials said the upcoming New Delhi meeting is expected to help shape the broader agenda for the BRICS Summit later this year, particularly on issues related to sustainable development, technological cooperation, trade connectivity and institutional reforms in the evolving global order.
