Narendra Modi on a post on X said he spoke with Masoud Pezeshkian today to discuss the rapidly escalating tensions in West Asia, emphasising the importance of safeguarding Indian nationals and ensuring the uninterrupted movement of goods and energy supplies.

In a post on X, Modi said he had a conversation with the Iranian president to discuss the “serious situation in the region,” expressing deep concern over the escalation of hostilities, the loss of civilian lives, and damage to infrastructure. The prime minister reiterated that the safety of Indian citizens and the “unhindered transit of goods and energy” remain India’s top priorities, while calling for dialogue and diplomacy to restore peace and stability.

The conversation comes amid growing global anxiety over disruptions to shipping through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical energy routes. The narrow waterway carries roughly 20% of global oil supplies, making it vital for energy-importing nations such as India.

The region has been witnessing heightened instability following escalating conflict involving Iran and Western allies, which has led to attacks on shipping and severe disruptions to maritime traffic. The crisis has caused oil prices to surge and raised fears of supply shortages for both crude oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG).

Despite the security risks, reports suggest that at least one oil tanker recently managed to pass through the Strait of Hormuz and reach India, highlighting the continuing importance of the route for global energy flows. The vessel, carrying Saudi crude, arrived at Mumbai after transiting the strait amid the ongoing crisis.

Diplomatic engagement between India and Iran has intensified in recent days, with senior officials from both countries also discussing maritime safety and the need to ensure secure shipping lanes in the Gulf.

India, one of the world’s largest oil importers, is closely monitoring developments in the region as prolonged disruptions to the Strait of Hormuz could significantly affect global energy supplies and shipping routes.

The prime minister reiterated India’s commitment to peace and stability in the region and urged all sides to pursue dialogue and diplomacy to reduce tensions.
