Why do earthquakes occur?

An earthquake occurs when the plates within the earth are displaced. These are tectonic plates. Actually, there are 7 plates inside the Earth, which keep rotating continuously. When they collide with each other more, there is a commotion on the earth.

How intensity is measured?

The intensity of an earthquake is estimated from the waves of energy emanating from its centre (epicentre). This wave spreads for hundreds of kilometres and causes vibration. Even cracks appear in the earth. If the depth of the earth is shallow, then the energy coming out of it is very close to the surface, which causes terrible destruction. Earthquakes that occur deep within the earth do not cause much damage on the surface. Tsunami arises when there is an earthquake in the sea.
