Rahul Gandhi today referred to senior leader Mallikarjun Kharge as the Congress President even before the outcome of the party poll was made public and he was proclaimed the victor.
“The new president will decide what my role will be,” he said to a question at a press meet, adding, “Ask Kharge ji and Sonia ji,” referring Mallikarjun Kharge and interim chief Sonia Gandhi. Since Shashi Tharoor was Shashi Tharoor’s opponent, Mr. Kharge was largely regarded as the Gandhis’ pick as the party’s first non-Gandhi leader in more than 20 years.
After leading the party’s “Bharat Jodo Yatra” into Andhra Pradesh’s Kulnoor today, Rahul Gandhi spoke to media at around 1:30 pm, when the counting was complete but the results had not yet been announced.
