Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Friday released a special postal stamp to commemorate 100 years of Vithalbhai Patel, the first Indian elected Speaker of the Central Legislative Assembly. The release took place at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha premises during the All India Speaker Conference.
The stamp, valued at ₹5, features a portrait of Vithalbhai Patel alongside the Delhi Vidhan Sabha building, with inscriptions in both Hindi and English recognizing his legacy.
Vithalbhai Patel, elder brother of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, made history in 1925 when he became the first Indian to be elected as Speaker. His tenure is remembered for strengthening parliamentary traditions and laying the foundation for India’s legislative processes.
Speaking at the event, Amit Shah highlighted Patel’s role in India’s democratic journey and said that honoring him with a postal stamp was a tribute to his invaluable contribution in shaping the country’s parliamentary democracy.
The event at the Delhi Vidhan Sabha brought together speakers and representatives from across India, marking the centenary of Patel’s historic election and reaffirming his legacy in the nation’s political history.
