What is Embroidery?
The art of embroidering involves using a needle to add thread or yarn to the cloth or other materials, along with other embellishments like beads, quills, pearls, and sequins. Embroidery is commonly found on caps, hats, coats, overlays, blankets, dress shirts, jeans, skirts, stockings, and golf shirts. A wide range of thread or yarn colours are available for embroidery.
Embroidery: When did it initially start?
Since people used a needle and thread to make their own clothes before the textile industry was established, it is almost certain that embroidery evolved from sewing.
Even today, the technical accomplishments of many anonymous embroiderers from the past are being recognised and are a part of museum collections all over the world. Pieces from the fifth century B.C. show impressive technical skills.
When women were restricted to the home, denied the right to vote, and denied access to education, the embroidery was a form of self-expression and entertainment for them.
Types of embroidery
