The garter is a fabric loop used to keep the stockings up. Read this article to find out more about it and how to style it.

What is a Garter?

A garter is a piece of clothing that consists of a short band of fabric placed around the leg to hold up stockings. They were traditionally tied just below the knee, where the leg is the thinnest, to prevent the stocking from slipping. Despite the fact that they are still frequently worn for fashion trends, the development of elastic has made them less important from a functional aspect.

In western countries, it is customary for the groom to ceremoniously take the bride’s garter off and toss it into a group of male wedding guests. Similar to the bouquet toss, the man who catches the garter is believed to be the next to get married.

Is it a fashion trend?

Intimate gear has become commonplace due to fashion taking precedence over function, and celebrities have been seen accessorising their ensembles with garters. If you’re feeling very extravagant, you can even wear them as a fashion statement because it has been fashioned outside of the bedroom.
