While the pinning of the collar onto the shirt was a simple, do-it-yourself option for polo players in England, John E. Brooks made it official and popularised it in the American market. The shirts gained popularity among sportsmen, were later worn for fashion, adopted by a certain population, and occasionally worn to fit the preppy image. Furthermore, button-down shirts later spread to other countries as a fashion accessory.
When worn with a slim tie, a fitting jacket, and a button-down shirt, button-down shirts can make you appear very stylish. However, without a tie, button-down shirts don’t usually work as well.
