Indian equity markets ended sharply lower on March 4 as escalating tensions between the US and Iran weighed on investor sentiment. Benchmark indices closed deep in the red, with selling pressure visible across several heavyweights.

At market close, the BSE Sensex fell 1,122.66 points or 1.40% to settle at 79,116.19, while the Nifty 50 dropped 385.20 points or 1.55% to close at 24,480.50.

Several Nifty constituents recorded notable declines during the session, led by metals, financials and auto stocks.

Tata Steel emerged as the biggest loser on the index. The stock closed at ₹196.7, falling 14.28 points or 6.8%.

Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles also declined sharply, ending the day at ₹351.2, down 19.40 points or 5.2%.

Shares of SBI Life Insurance settled at ₹1,930.6 after slipping 101.60 points or 5.0% during the session.

Engineering and infrastructure major Larsen & Toubro closed at ₹3,882.6, registering a decline of 184.10 points or 4.5%.

Metal stock JSW Steel ended at ₹1,213.0, down 54.30 points or 4.3%.

Shriram Finance finished the session at ₹1,010.0, falling 42.50 points or 4.0%.

Shares of Bajaj Finance closed at ₹945.1, declining 33.15 points or 3.4%.

Grasim Industries settled at ₹2,683.2, down 94.10 points or 3.4%.

Cement major UltraTech Cement ended the session at ₹12,107.0 after falling 414.00 points or 3.3%.

Meanwhile, HDFC Life Insurance closed at ₹684.6, declining 22.70 points or 3.2%.
