LIC shares decline to new 52-week low after December premium dropped 41% YoY

Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC) shares fell nearly 2%, reaching a new 52-week low of Rs 823.70, following a significant decline in its new business premium (NBP). The total NBP of life insurance companies dropped by 21.7% year-on-year (Y-o-Y) to Rs 30,218.71 crore in December 2024.

LIC’s NBP plummeted 41.15% Y-o-Y to Rs 13,523.87 crore, with a notable decrease in group single premium, which halved to Rs 8,191.29 crore. Meanwhile, private insurers saw a 7% growth in NBP, reaching Rs 16,694.85 crore. This sharp decline in LIC’s performance reflects the industry’s ongoing challenges, especially with revised surrender value norms impacting results.
