Is IPL 2025 cancelled or suspended? Explained

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially suspended IPL 2025 indefinitely due to the ongoing military conflict between India and Pakistan. The decision came after days of uncertainty, cross-border tensions, and escalating hostilities that impacted player movement and match scheduling.

The tipping point was the abrupt cancellation of the Punjab Kings vs Delhi Capitals match in Dharamsala on May 8, which was abandoned midway due to air raid alerts and technical issues with floodlights amid blackout orders. This forced the BCCI to hold an emergency meeting on May 9, following which it was decided that the remainder of the season could not continue under the current security and logistical constraints.

As a result, the highly-anticipated match between Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), which was scheduled for Friday, May 9, has also been called off, along with all other upcoming fixtures.

This is not the first time that the Indian Premier League has faced an indefinite suspension. Back in 2021, the tournament was suspended mid-season due to a surge in COVID-19 cases across teams and the country. At the time, the BCCI managed to resume the tournament’s second phase in the UAE under strict bio-bubble protocols.

As of now, BCCI has not confirmed any alternative venue or timeline for resumption, and all stakeholders await further directions from the central government and security agencies.
