Income Tax Return filing deadline for FY20 extends till January 10 next year

The government, yet again, has extended the date to file the Income Tax Returns (ITR) for FY 2019-20 till January 10, 2021 for most individual taxpayers, from the earlier deadline of December 31, 2020. This is the third time that the tax return filing deadline has been extended.

This came in after a large number of small businesses professionals and taxpayers across the country were not be able to meet the earlier deadline and hence, demanded an extension. Many have been citing issues like shortage of manpower and technical glitches on the income tax website which is making it difficult for them to meet the December 31 deadline.

The last date for filing an income tax return (ITR), which is usually on 31 July of each year, was extended due to COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent lockdowns in the country. More than 4 crore ITRs for AY 2020-21 for individual tax payers have been filed till December 25, 2020.
