India’s Trade Deficit widens to $22.9 billion in January, up from December’s $21.94 billion

India’s trade deficit widened to $22.9 billion in January 2025, compared to $21.94 billion in December 2024, according to government data released on Monday. The increase in the deficit was driven by higher imports, which outpaced export growth.

For January, exports were recorded at $36.43 billion, while imports surged to $59.42 billion. Merchandise exports decreased slightly from $38.01 billion in December, while imports remained nearly flat compared to $59.95 billion in December.

In the services sector, exports were estimated at $38.55 billion for January, a notable increase from $32.66 billion in December. On the other hand, services imports rose to $18.22 billion compared to $17.50 billion in December.

The widening trade deficit reflects the challenges posed by a growing demand for imports, despite a positive performance in services exports.
