Indian government unveils ambitious highway project replacing Bharatmala Phase II

The new plan, dubbed “Vision 2047”, aims to construct 50,000 km of highways across the country, including about 35,000 km of access-controlled expressways.

The Indian government has announced a bold new initiative to replace the second phase of the Bharatmala project with a more ambitious plan. The new plan, dubbed “Vision 2047”, aims to construct 50,000 km of highways across the country, including about 35,000 km of access-controlled expressways.

The announcement comes as part of the government’s ongoing efforts to improve the country’s infrastructure and connectivity. The Vision 2047 project is expected to significantly enhance the efficiency of freight and passenger movement across the country, thereby boosting economic growth.

The Bharatmala project, which was launched in 2015, aimed to develop and expand approximately 35,000 km of highways at an estimated cost of INR 5.35 lakh crore. However, with the introduction of Vision 2047, the government has decided to replace the second phase of Bharatmala with a more comprehensive and ambitious plan.

The Vision 2047 project is expected to be one of the largest infrastructure projects in India’s history. It will involve the construction of high-quality, access-controlled expressways that will connect major cities and economic hubs across the country. These expressways will be designed to facilitate high-speed transit, thereby reducing travel times and improving logistics efficiency.

The government believes that this ambitious project will play a crucial role in achieving India’s goal of becoming a $5 trillion economy by 2024. It is also expected to generate significant employment opportunities during its construction phase.
