
On Friday, Ajanta Neog, Assam’s first woman Finance Minister, presented the first budget of the government. The government presented the Rs 566.20 crore deficit budget in the state assembly without the proposal of any new tax for the public.
Neog, while reading the budgetary proposals, said that she followed the footsteps of her predecessor who decided not to tax the public in their budgets.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Chief Minister and then Finance Minister of the Sarbananda Sonowal government was the predecessor of Neog.
In the budget, a compensation of Rs 1 lakh had been allotted each for the family members of those who died due to COVID-19.
There was also a promise made that the students of class 9 and class 10 in the government school would be provided with smartphones and one lakh recruitment in government jobs.
In the budget announcement, a microfinance loan waiver was also presented for the economically vulnerable.
There was also a mention in the budget for a flood-free Assam to build embankments and roads of 1000 km.
