Scarlett Johansson has shared her reaction to a joke made at her expense during Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” segment in December 2024. The joke, delivered by her husband, Colin Jost, and written by co-host Michael Che, drew an unexpected comparison that left the actress visibly shocked.
Speaking in an interview with InStyle on March 11, Johansson described the joke as “vulgar” and something she hadn’t anticipated. While she had been informed that Che had prepared a joke about her, she didn’t expect the direction it would take. “I thought, ‘How bad could it be?’” she admitted. However, the moment the graphic appeared on screen, her reaction changed. “I was like, ‘No! No, Michael!’” she recalled.
Jost later addressed the situation during an appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on January 20, acknowledging that even though Johansson had been given a heads-up, neither of them foresaw the actual punchline. “They said it would be a light joke, but when the image appeared, she was backstage thinking, ‘Oh, that’s what it is?’” Jost said.
Despite the initial shock, Johansson took the moment in stride. The couple, who married in 2020 and share a son, Cosmo, found themselves still processing the experience hours later. Reflecting on the aftermath, Jost admitted, “I think I’m in trouble with a lot of people.”
