‘Squid Game’ becomes Netflix’s biggest-ever launch hit with 111 million viewers in less than a month

Dystopian South Korean show has topped Netflix charts in more than 80 countries.

South Korean series Squid Game has turned into Netflix’s most popular series ever. The spine-chiller show has drawn more than 111 million fans in under a month, the streaming service uncovered.

Netflix, which delivers just specific viewership metrics and data, shared the achievement through a video. In the video, the announcer thanked fans for their support.

“I would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to you all,” the announcer said, with visuals from the show playing along with it. The announcer continued, “111 million of you have joined the ranks of the VIPs, making Squid Game our No. 1 show in the world.” “And for the rest of you,” the announcer continued, “Will you seize the opportunity to join the game?”

The show features a baffling organization that offers individuals in debt to compete in a deadly game. They allow them an opportunity to win a life-changing amount of cash. As they begin playing the game, they understand that they would be killed in case they are eliminated from the game.

Netflix’s co-CEO and chief content officer, Ted Sarandos, told Variety, “We did not see that coming, in terms of its global popularity.”

Squid Game’s writer-director Hwang Dong-hyuk recently addressed Variety about the show. “I wanted to write a story that was an allegory or fable about modern capitalist society, something that depicts an extreme competition, somewhat like the extreme competition of life. But I wanted it to use the kind of characters we’ve all met in real life,” he said.
