Saroj Khan’s impact to Bollywood continues to be unsurpassed. Saroj choreographed nearly 2000 songs over her 40-year career, including chart-toppers like Hawa Hawai, Ek Do Teen, and Choli Ke Peeche Kya Hai. Saroj passed away in 2020 from heart arrest, but new rumours indicate that filmmaker Hansal Mehta and producer Bhushan Kumar are working on a biopic based on her life.
Pinkvilla reported that the project is now in the works and will open its doors in 2024. According to the report, “The biopic is presently in the writing stage and the team is planning to unleash the story in an episodic format. Saroj Khan’s journey in the industry is nothing short of an inspiration for millions of dancers across the globe, and Hansal is trying to be very thorough with his research.”
“The idea is to pay an ode to the contribution of Saroj Khan to the dancing community. While the world dances to the steps designed by her, very few know the efforts that went into reaching the position of being the best in the field,” the source was quoted as saying. The source further added that the biopic will delve into many unknown aspects of the choreographer’s life.
Bhushan Kumar also confirmed the project in an interview with Pinkvilla. When asked about his upcoming projects, he stated, “We are working on Saroj ji’s biopic which Hansal sir is doing. Directed and created by Hansal Mehta. That’s in the writing stage. In OTT, you have to write a lot, and when it’s a biopic, it’s a lot more.”
In the meantime, Bhushan is preparing for the release of his next two feature films, Yariyaan 2 and Animal. Kaala, directed by Bejoy Nambiar, is the producer’s debut into the OTT category.
