The Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway trailer, which was released on Thursday, has renewed interest in a case that an Indian couple battled in Norway ten years ago to regain custody of their two children. Norway’s severe child-rearing laws surprised the entire globe when the country’s child welfare agency took custody of Anurup and Sagarika Bhattacharya’s two children. Also, it caused a diplomatic dispute between Norway and India.

Sagarika Bhattacharya’s tough voyage will soon be captured on film in Ashima Chibber’s Mrs. Chatterjee Vs. Norway. The movie marks Bengali actor Anirban Bhattacharya’s Bollywood debut and stars Rani Mukerji in the lead role. Jim Sarbh and Neena Gupta have significant parts in the movie as well.

The first scene of the movie trailer features Mrs. Chatterjee (Mukerji) living it up in Oslo with her husband and two children, Shubh and Shuchi. Everything is fine until one day when government agents arrive and abduct Chatterjee’s children. The trailer depicts the collapse that follows, the emotional roller coaster, and a mother’s wailing appeal to be reunited with her young children.

In 2011, the Indian couple engaged in a historic struggle with Norway, during which the country’s Barnevarne child welfare agency took their two children and placed them in foster care.

When the Child Welfare Services (CWS) took their children due to “neglect and emotional disconnect,” the couple’s lives were completely flipped upside down. The kids were supposed to be under custody until they were 18.

The woman, who was in her late 20s, was referred to as being mentally incapable of raising her children. A humble Birati lady and the entire nation engaged in a protracted court dispute over the course of two years as a result. The rights activists and even the Indian government were forced to intervene because of her strength, persistence, and motherly suffering.

The children were moved to India in April 2012 by the CWS during this extended period, during which her marriage failed.

The children were in Anurup’s parents’ custody in India since CWS declared Sagarika ‘unfit to take care of her kids’. In order to be reunited with her children, she fled from Norwegian courtrooms to Indian courtrooms, which resulted in yet another conflict.

In an exclusive interview with Times of India in August 2022, Sagarika said, “My son had some developmental issues while my daughter was still being breastfed when they were snatched away from me. Imagine my plight at that time.”
