After numerous setbacks, criticisms, and delays, Om Raut’s ambitious retelling of the Ramayana, ‘Adipurush,’ was eventually premiered in theatres on Friday, June 16. In many regions of the country, the movie’s release was marked by much fanfare, and the enthusiasm is evident in the box office take.

Adipurush reportedly cost over 500 crore rupees to produce, and it debuted at the box office with a bang, taking about 140 crore rupees globally.

Prabhas plays Lord Ram in ‘Adipurush,’ while Kriti Sanon plays Sita, Saif Ali Khan plays Ravana, and Devdatta Nage plays Lord Hanuman.

The manufacturers’ official estimates show that “Adipurush” made Rs 140 crore on its first day of distribution worldwide.

With that, it joined the company of some of the greatest openings in movie history, including “War,” “Pathaan,” and “Brahmastra.”

According to Box Office India, “Adipurush” made about Rs 36 crore in India, falling short of top domestic titles like Shah Rukh Khan’s “Pathaan,” Yash’s “KGF: Chapter 2,” and Hrithik Roshan’s “War.”

Given the anticipation and advance bookings for “Adipurush,” the movie is anticipated to have a record-breaking weekend, which could provide the creators with some relief given the enormous cost of the endeavour.

Since the film’s inception, “Adipurush” has been dogged by controversy, and now that it is finally available for viewers to see in theatres, it has ignited an even larger discussion.

Many political figures and Hindu organisations have criticised the producers, charging them of misrepresenting the Ramayana and doing a bad job with the visual effects and language.

The Delhi High Court has also received a PIL over the incorrect portrayal of Hanuman and Ravan.

Not only that, but producers are allegedly paying netizens to remove their bad ratings and promote the movie in exchange for positive reviews.
