18 upcoming Bollywood movies that is all set to lit the Box office this year

2019 turned out to be a pretty great year for Bollywood in terms of both, the box-office numbers and content. It was great to see content-driven films like Bala, Super 30 and The Sky Is Pink to be so well received by the audience.

This year too seems full of promises with pretty interesting movies in the pipeline hitting the theatres in 2020. So, as we enter this new decade, I thought of listing the Bollywood movies scheduled to be released this year that I personally think could be paisa vasool.

AK VS AK

The Netflix film ‘AK vs AK’ is a story directed by Vikramaditya Motwane starring Anil Kapoor and filmmaker Anurag Kashyap. The story is based upon a film director who kidnaps the daughter of a well-known movie star. As the star searches for his daughter in Mumbai, the director who has kidnapped his daughter films the search in real-time for his next film.

Agra

Agra is an upcoming Hindi-language drama film by award-winning director Kanu Behl and produced under the banner of Yodlee films. The film features Rahul Roy in the lead role. Agra is a story of a family and an exploration of space in an increasingly crowded world. The film explores sexual politics within a family and the consequences of it on their relationships.

Tryst With Destiny

Directed by Prashant Nair, this bilingual film features four stories about social issues that India has been grappling with since independence. The title is a reference to Prime Minister Jawarharlal Nehru’s speech Parliament on August 14, 1947. The film won the best screenplay award at Tribeca Film Festival’s international narrative category. The cast includes Vineet Kumar Singh, Geetanjali Thapa, Amit Sial, Prakash Raj, and Suhasini Maniratnam.

Dolly Kitty Aur Woh Chamakte Sitare

Starring Konkona Sen Sharma and Bhumi Pednekar, the film chronicles the journey of two rebellious small-town women, who seek independence and freedom to embrace their desires. The film is directed by Alankrita Shrivastava, the movie has already screened at various prestigious film festivals to positive reviews.
Alankrita Shrivastava’s follow-up to Lipstick Under my Burkha, Dolly Kitty is a fun, ambitious burst of color about two women finding freedom and sexual agency in a newly developing city.

Gujan Saxena: The Kargil Girl

Gunjan Saxena: The Kargil Girl is an upcoming Indian Hindi biopic film directed by Sharan Sharma and produced under Dharma Productions and Zee Studios. The film features Janhvi Kapoor in the lead role of Indian Air Force pilot Gunjan Saxena, the first female and Indian woman airforce pilot in combat along with Srividya Rajan. It also features Pankaj Tripathi and Angad Bedi in supporting roles. The film was announced on 26 December 2018 as Kapoor shared the first look. Principal photography commenced on 20 February 2019 and was wrapped up in October; it was extensively filmed across Lucknow. The film’s release date has not been finalized yet due to the Coronavirus pandemic.

Roohi Afzana

Rajkummar Rao and Jahnvi Kapoor team up for the first time for this horror-comedy movie. It will star Kapoor in a double role. The movie is directed by Hardik Mehta and produced by Dinesh Vijan under the banner Maddock Films. It tells the story of a ghost who abducts brides on their honeymoons. The movie also stars Varun Sharma. It was announced on 29 March 2019 and filming kicked off on 14 June 2019 in Agra.

‘83

Ranveer Singh’s much-awaited sports drama is all set to hit box offices. The movie is directed by Kabir Khan and jointly produced by Khan, Vishnu Vardhan Induri, Phantom Films, Deepika Padukone and Sajid Nadiadwala, Co-distributed by Reliance Entertainment. The film stars Ranveer Singh as cricketer Kapil Dev, along with Padukone, Tahir Raj Bhasin, Saqib Saleem, Harrdy Sandhu, Ammy Virk, Jiiva, Pankaj Tripathi, Boman Irani, Nishant Dahiya, and Sahil Khattar. In September 2017, Reliance Entertainment and Vibri Media hosted an event to announce the film with the team that had won the 1983 World Cup. The shooting began on 5 June 2019 in England. Although it was scheduled for theatrical release on 10 April 2020, the release has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Coolie No.1

Varun Dhawan and Sara Ali Khan are portraying the roles of Govinda and Karisma Kapoor in the reprise of the iconic movie. The film is directed by David Dhawan and produced by Vashu Bhagnani. This will be the remake of the 1995 film of the same name. Paresh Rawal will be seen in a supporting role. Principal photography began on 8 August 2019 in Bangkok. The film was set to be theatrically released in India on 1 May 2020 but has been postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

Khaali Peeli

The movie revolves around how a boy and girl meet in a black and yellow taxi and stars Ishaan Khattar and Ananya Panday in leading roles. The movie is directed by Maqbool Khan and produced by Ali Abbas Zafar and Himanshu Mehra. We will also see Jaideep Ahlawat as an antagonist in the movie. Khaali Peeli was announced on 28 August 2019 as the makers unveiled first look. The principal photography commenced on 11 September 2019.

Sadak 2

Sadak 2 is an upcoming project of Mahesh Bhatt which will be a romantic thriller. The film is the sequel to the 1991 film Sadak. The sequel stars Sanjay Dutt, Alia Bhatt, Pooja Bhatt, and Aditya Roy Kapur. The film marks Mahesh Bhatt’s return as a director after 20 years. The film is about Ravi’s depression and how he helps a young woman’s encounter with a godman, who is out to expose this fake guru running an ashram. The shooting began on 18 May 2019, and the film was shot in Ooty, Mumbai, Mysore, and Uttarakhand.

Shamshera

Shamshera is an upcoming action-adventure film starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor. It is produced by Aditya Chopra’s Yash Raj Films. The movie is written and being directed by Karan Malhotra. Set in the 1800s, the film is about a dacoit tribe who took charge in the fight for their rights and independence against the British. Ranbir Kapoor is playing a double role, as central character Shamshera and his father. Vaani Kapoor is playing a dancer. Principal photography of the film began on 1 December 2018 and wrapped in January 2020. The film’s release date is still not finalized due Coronavirus pandemic.

Jersey

Jersey is an upcoming sports drama film directed by Gowtham Tinnanuri and adapted from his 2019 Tollywood film under the same title. It stars Shahid Kapoor as a cricketer portrayed by Nani in the original version, besides Mrunal Thakur, Pankaj Kapur, and an ensemble cast. The film is presented by Allu Aravind and produced by Aman Gill, Dil Raju.

Radhe: Your Most Wanted Bhai

After the success of Dabangg 3 and the portrayal of a supercop, Salman Khan will be getting in the role of a ‘Bhai’ in Prabhudeva’s next. The film will also star Disha Patani and Jackie Shroff. The shoot of the film as already begun.

Toofan

After Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Farhan Akhtar and Rakeysh Omprakash Mehra will reunite for this sports drama movie. Akhtar will portray the role of a national level boxer.We will also get to see Paresh Rawal, Mrunal Thakur, and Isha Talwar. It was announced on 16 January 2019 and filming began on 24 August 2019 in Dongri.

Laal Singh Chadda

Mr. Perfectionist, Aamir Khan was missed on the silver screen in 2019 but 2020 will bring cheers for his fan. The exact release date of the film hasn’t been finalized yet. Laal Singh Chaddha is an adaptation of Hollywood film Forrest Gump. Aamir will be seen in Sikh avatar while Kareena will sport a no-glam look.

Brahmastra

Real-life couple Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt will be seen onscreen for the first time alongside Amitabh Bachchan starer Brahmastra is one of the most awaited films of the yea. Slated to release in December this year, the film got delayed and will not hit the theatres in the summer of 2020. However, the release date hasn’t been finalized yet.

Bhool Bhulaiyaan 2

The sequel of comedy-horror Bhool Bhulaiya will see Kartik Aaryan in the lead role. The film is directed by Anees Bazmee and produced by Bhushan Kumar. Starring Kartik Aaryan, Tabu, and Kiara Advani, it is a standalone sequel of the 2007 film Bhool Bhulaiyaa directed by Priyadarshan. The first three posters were released on 19 August 2019.

Jayeshibhai Jordaar

Jayeshbhai Jordaar is an upcoming comedy film produced by Yash Raj Films and directed by newcomer Divyang Thakkar. It stars Ranveer Singh in the title role as a Gujarati man who believes in equal rights between males and females in the society. The film also features newcomer Shalini Pandey, Boman Irani, and Ratna Pathak. It is also the debut film of Gujarati actress Deeksha Joshi. Rolling began in December 2019 and ended by February 2020. It is set to theatrically release on Gandhi Jayanti 2020.
