Movie lovers in India, especially fans of classic thrillers, have something exciting to look forward to this month. Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1975 blockbuster Jaws is making a splash back in theatres with a stunning 4K restored version, starting April 17, 2026, at select PVR INOX screens across the country.

This re-release is part of PVR INOX’s “Auteurs Curation” series, which celebrates legendary filmmakers and brings timeless cinema back to the big screen for new and old audiences alike. The 4K restoration promises to revive the film’s original visual and sonic depth — from the vast open sea to the heart-pounding tension and John Williams’ unforgettable score that still sends chills down the spine.

Why ‘Jaws’ Still Matters

Released on June 20, 1975, Jaws was a game-changer. Based on Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel and co-written by Benchley and Carl Gottlieb, the film follows police chief Martin Brody (Roy Scheider), a marine biologist, and a grizzled shark hunter as they battle a massive great white shark terrorising a New England beach town during the busy July 4th weekend.

It became the highest-grossing film of its time (a record later broken by Star Wars in 1977) and is widely credited as the prototype for the modern summer blockbuster. With masterful suspense, minimal on-screen shark appearances (thanks to mechanical issues during filming), and pure storytelling, Jaws defined an entire genre and launched Spielberg’s legendary career. It also won three Oscars.

Niharika Bijli, Lead Strategist at PVR INOX Limited, said: “We are constantly looking at ways to enrich our programming. The return of ‘Jaws’ is a testament to the growing audience appetite for immersive, high-impact storytelling. It’s a film that comes alive in a theatre, where sound, scale, and shared anticipation elevate the experience.”

PVR INOX added that with the 4K restoration, “Jaws regains its intended visual and sonic depth… offering audiences a rare opportunity to engage with the film as it was originally envisioned.”

Where and When to Watch

The re-release will screen at PVR INOX theatres nationwide from April 17, 2026. While exact cities and show timings will be updated on the PVR INOX app and website closer to the date, expect screenings in major metros including Delhi, Mumbai, Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Chennai, and others where the chain operates.

This comes shortly after special 4K screenings organised by the Film Heritage Foundation in Mumbai (such as the well-attended April 2, 2026 show at Regal Cinema), showing strong renewed interest in the classic among Indian cinephiles.

Perfect for a Theatre Experience

Jaws was made for the big screen — the fear builds better in the dark with surround sound and a large audience reacting together. Whether you’re a first-timer discovering why this film terrified a generation or a fan revisiting it in superior quality, the 4K version is expected to deliver enhanced clarity, richer colours, and sharper details.

More classic titles under the “Auteurs Curation” initiative are expected to be announced soon, giving audiences a chance to enjoy cinema history the way it was meant to be seen.

Tickets are likely to go on sale soon via the PVR INOX website, app, or in-cinema counters. Keep an eye out for updates, as popular shows may fill up quickly.

If you’ve never seen Jaws on the big screen — or want to relive the summer of ’75 with modern picture and sound — mark your calendars. Just remember: you’re gonna need a bigger theatre.
