In a recent interview, Prince Harry opened up about his ongoing fight against tabloid newspapers for their phone-hacking practices.
The prince appeared in a documentary called Tabloids on Trial on ITV, a British TV channel. The show explores how British tabloids illegally obtained information, featuring Harry alongside other celebrities like Hugh Grant, Charlotte Church, and Paul Gascoigne.
What Did Prince Harry Say About Queen Elizabeth II?
During the interview, Harry spoke about his late grandmother, Queen Elizabeth II, and her support for his legal battles against the tabloids. He shared that they had many conversations before her passing in 2022, and she was very supportive of his efforts. Harry recalled that Elizabeth understood how important this fight was to him and encouraged him to see it through.
This interview is the first time Harry has spoken publicly since winning his court case against Mirror Group Newspapers (MGN), which he described as a “monumental victory.” The court found that MGN had unlawfully gathered information about Harry’s private life, as reported by the Independent.
Even though Harry won against MGN, he’s still fighting other legal battles. He has also sued News Group Newspapers (NGN) and Associated Newspapers.
How Does the Rest of the Royal Family Feel About It?
Harry admitted that his legal fight with the tabloids has contributed to the growing rift between him and the rest of his family. There was apparently an agreement between the Royals and NGN to avoid courtroom clashes, which Elizabeth knew about, but Harry said he doesn’t blame her. This agreement delayed his ability to pursue his claim against NGN.
While Harry is determined to hold the tabloids accountable, the rest of the Royal Family seems more focused on moving forward and not rehashing past issues. Harry believes his efforts are necessary despite the backlash he faces from the media. He mentioned that the British press’s constant harassment has made him and Meghan feel unsafe visiting the UK.
Despite the support from Queen Elizabeth, Harry feels that the rest of his family hasn’t been as supportive. He noted that it would have been nice if they had tackled these issues together as a family, but he’s wary of speaking out more due to the negative press he might face.
