Brendan Gleeson to appear in ‘Joker: Folie a Deux,’ alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Lady Gaga

The Irish actor and director is the most recent member to join the Joaquin Phoenix-led cast

Warner Bros. and DC Films to develop a follow-up to Joker, the Oscar-winning, $1 billion movie office smash from 2019 based on the DC villain. and DC Films. Banshees of Inisherin, a new movie starring Gleeson and Colin Farrell, will have its world debut in Venice before moving on to Toronto for its North American premiere.

Director Todd Phillips, who guided Phoenix to an Oscar for “Joker” in 2019, is back. However, the sequel is a musical, although one that is more in the style of “A Star is Born” than “West Side Story” or “Singing in the Rain,” whereas the first movie played like a comic book take on Martin Scorsese’s “Taxi Driver.”

DC and Warner Bros. are supporting the follow-up. Production is to start from December. Additionally, it’s unclear who Gleeson will portray.

When Joker was finally released in October 2019, it was already riding a wave of praise from the autumn film festivals. This helped the movie have a record-breaking opening weekend and cause box office experts to constantly revise their forecasts. The R-rated film finished its theatrical run as the fourth-highest-grossing film of all time. Following that, it received 11 Oscar nominations, including best film, and Phoenix won for best actor and best score (for Hildur Gudnadottir).

Warner Bros. has set an Oct. 4, 2024, release for Joker: Folie à Deux. Deadline was the first to report on Gleeson joining the Joker sequel.
