Adam Sandler is making his way back to the golf course, nearly three decades after Happy Gilmore first hit the screens. In May 2024, Netflix confirmed that Happy Gilmore 2 is officially in development, with Sandler reprising his role as the unconventional golfer.
The original 1996 sports comedy followed Happy, an unsuccessful hockey player who discovers his unexpected talent for golf. Hoping to save his grandmother’s home from foreclosure, he enters a professional tournament, facing off against rival Shooter McGavin. The film starred Christopher McDonald, Julie Bowen, Frances Bay, Carl Weathers, Allen Covert, and Ben Stiller and has since become a cult classic.
Speculation about a sequel had been circulating for months before Netflix’s announcement. McDonald, who played Shooter McGavin, had hinted at the possibility during a March 2024 interview on Cleveland’s 92.3 The Fan. He recalled a conversation with Sandler in which the actor shared a first draft of Happy Gilmore 2 and assured him that he would love it.
While details about the plot and cast remain undisclosed, the confirmation of the sequel has sparked excitement among fans of the original film. Given Sandler’s long-standing collaboration with Netflix on various projects, his return as Happy Gilmore is highly anticipated.
With production still in its early stages, audiences can expect more updates in the coming months as the project develops.
