A major controversy has erupted in Dehradun after popular Haryanvi folk singer Masoom Sharma found himself in legal trouble for allegedly using abusive and obscene language during a live performance at DAV (PG) College. The incident occurred on April 10 during the closing ceremony of the college’s Student Union Week cultural program, prompting the Dalanwala Police to register a criminal case against him.
According to police sources and multiple eyewitness accounts, the event was attended by Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami and other dignitaries, including Khanpur MLA Umesh Sharma Kau. Sharma, who was performing alongside fellow artist Ajay Hooda, reportedly lost his temper after the Chief Minister left the venue. In a heated outburst captured on viral videos, he used expletives, issued open challenges to an alleged rival, and made remarks that many in the audience found deeply inappropriate for a college function in the culturally sensitive “Devbhumi” of Uttarakhand.
A complaint was lodged by Dehradun-based lawyer Pranchal Nauni (and separately by advocate Sandeep Chamoli on behalf of the Advocates Service Forum and Uttarakhand Kranti Dal), accusing the singer of hurting public sentiments, particularly those of students and women present. The FIR invokes Sections 296 (obscene acts and songs), 352 (intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace), 79 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman), and 351(3) (criminal intimidation) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). Dehradun City SP Pramod Kumar confirmed that a formal notice has been served and a thorough investigation is underway.

In his defence, Masoom Sharma later released a video statement claiming he had received serious death threats prior to the event from individuals in Dehradun. He said the stress and fear carried over onto the stage, leading to his angry reaction. The singer has indicated he will file a counter-complaint with supporting CCTV evidence.
The episode has drawn sharp reactions. The Haryana State Commission for Women has taken suo motu cognisance and summoned Sharma to appear before it in Panchkula on April 18, citing “conduct unbecoming of a public figure” and disrespect towards women. Protests were also held outside the college, with critics questioning the rising trend of “gali culture” and aggressive content in live performances.
Masoom Sharma, known for his energetic Haryanvi folk numbers and massive popularity among youth, now faces scrutiny that could impact his public image. Police have assured strict action based on evidence, while the incident has sparked a wider debate on maintaining decorum at public and educational events.
As the probe continues, the case highlights the fine line between artistic expression and accountability when performers take the stage before young audiences. Further developments are awaited.
