Lata Mangeshkar and Asha Bhosle never gelled up well. Here’s why!

The world of music will not be the same without the veteran singer Lata Mangeshkar. Asha Bhosle, referred to as Asha Tai and Lata Ji knew the world of music more than anyone.

The Mangeshkar sisters had tremendous and flawless career. They shared very close bond in their childhood. In fact, Lata Ji quitted studies when teachers objected taking Asha to school with her.

Asha Bhosle, being the queen of her own words, eloped at the age of 16 with Mr. Ganpatrao Bhosle, who was 31 years old. Lata Ji was unhappy with sister’s decision and didn’t approve of their marriage. She also revealed in an interview, “He stopped her from coming to our house and he stopped us sisters from meeting.”

The scars between Lata Ji and Asha Tai didn’t soften even when Asha Tai got separated with Mr. Ganpatrao Bhosle. Lata Ji stopped Asha Tai to sing for O.P. Nayyar. The director revealed in an interview, “Asha and Lata, staying in opposite flats at Bombay’s Peddar Road, shared a maid. The maid’s responsibility was to come and tell the younger sister that Lata had just recorded something wonderful for Asha to lose her vocal poise. Such was Lata phobia that it took me some months to convince Asha that she had a voice individualistic enough to evolve a singing style all of her own.”

Lata Ji was someone who didn’t like to be part of controversies and stayed away from media. Whereas, Asha Tai being extrovert in nature, was the loving one. While Lata Ji reached heights, Asha Tai was just struggling in the industry.

Film Saaz directed by  Sai Paranjpye was released in 1998, that was reportedly based on their lives. The Mangeshkar sisters didn’t like the idea of this film and called it a waste of time.

When their brother Pandit Hridayanath Mangeshkar felicitated everyone in the music industry. Both the sisters were awarded. With quite amaze, Asha Bhosle was honoured by none other than her sister, Lata Mangeshkar.

Rest in peace, ‘Queen of Melody’ Lata Mangeshkar!
