Udham Singh is a tribute to original leading man, Irrfan Khan, says Director Shoojit Sircar

As the film shoots are going to resume after the permission being granted from the Maharashtra CM. Director Shoojit Sircar started off with the post-production of his anticipated Sardar Udham Singh on Monday. The film stars Vicky Kaushal in lead and has already concluded the entire shooting process in February much before the commencement of nation-wide lockdown. Sircar’s ‘Gulabo-Sitabo’ is set to release on 12th June, on Amazon Prime. The film will be released directly on the OTT platform, under the current circumstances.

Shoojit explains, “Gulabo Sitabo was ready before the lockdown; all I did was deliver the film. The work on Udham Singh was halted due to the [suspension of shoots]. Now, we are adhering by the guidelines as we proceed. The future at work won’t be easy. Shooting is best done in utter chaos. A film can’t be shot with constraints; it needs human interaction. But the virus is here to stay. So, we have to realign our methods.”

‘Udham Singh’ initially had Irrfan playing the lead. When Irrfan when was diagnosed with a neuroendocrine tumour in 2018, Shoojit wanted to wait for him to get well and resume the shoot, but then started off with the shoot in 2019. We lost Irrfan in April, and now it’s over a month that the stalwart actor has left us.

“I think about Irrfan every day. His image floats in front of my eyes. We had grown close in the past two years when he underwent treatment. During his last 10 days, I was following up with Sutapa [Irrfan’s wife] and Babil [son]. Babil broke the news to me that morning. I still feel Irrfan is with me, talking to me. I can never get over his loss.”
