Most criticism over item numbers states that the words they carry help to objectify women, further misogyny. When many argue that such a device as an item cannot help a cause, director Amar Kaushik, whose Stree 2 features an item number but with feminist undertones, is of the opinion that, with the Aaj Ki Raat song, it can be used as a tool to take the movie’s message further while taking the story forward.
He claims one can do a “masala film with an item song” and still have thoughtful content in the lyrics. He claims that when doing a big-budget film, one should present a “full package”. However, he adds that “one must be aware of what one want to say.”
There is no denying that people come to theatres to watch item songs. However, I wanted to ensure it served the storyline without compromising on quality or respectfulness,” says the 41-year-old, who has directed movies like Bhediya (2022) and Bala (2019).
He says, “My brief was very clear, let’s not go below the belt because that’s not what the film is. Kuch cheezein mein film politically correct honi chahiye. Aap bolo aap jo bolna chahte ho aur aadaein bhi honi chahiye lekin jab aap lyrics suno toh lage ki ‘yeh toh badi baat bol di hai’, aisa baad mein samajh ayega.”
