Queen Elizabeth II, 96, passed away quietly at Balmoral castle, according to a statement from the royal family. Earlier on Thursday, the longest-reigning queen in the UK was placed under medical monitoring when her illness worsened.

Elizabeth is the oldest and longest-reigning monarch in British history, having reached her 70th birthday this year. She outlasted her great-great-grandmother Queen Victoria, who ruled for 63 years and seven months, in September 2015.
