In a complaint alleging the defamation of the Sikh community and malign portrayal of Jathedar of the Akal Takth, the supreme religious authority of Sikhs, as a “terrorist” in the movie Emergency, the Chandigarh court yesterday issued notices to Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut and others associated with it.

The complaint has been filed by president of the NGO Lawyers for Humanity, advocate Ranvinder Singh, who claimed that the film is wrongly representing historical events and disrespects the Sikh community.

In the plea, Bassi maintained that the erstwhile Jathedar has been portrayed factually wrong in the trailer of Emergency. He said, “The accused, without studying proper historical facts, had portrayed Sikhs in a negative light and falsely alleged that the sitting Jathedar of Sri Akal Takth Sahib was demanding a separate state. This depiction is entirely false and means to malign the image of Sikhs and the Akal Takth Jathedars.”

Bassi further commented that it hurts the sentiments and feelings of the Sikh community in general and the deponent. In this petition, allegations have been made against Ranaut for spreading false information and causing intercommunity tension.

Now, the court awaits responses from Kangana Ranaut and the others before moving ahead with further hearings on the matter.
