Farhan is an actor, composer, producer, director, writer, and singer. Even though he is well-known for his acting and directing abilities, we celebrate his 50th birthday today by revisiting some of the most memorable lines he has written during his career. Farhan made history as a director in 2001. It redefined the standards for cinematic language in terms of both visuals and conversation, and it also helped shape Farhan’s style as a writer and director.
Dil Chahta Hai
Take a look at this scenario where Saif Ali Khan’s character is provoked by Aamir Khan’s character to confront his lover, Suchitra Pillai. However, we only witness Saif being cut off as soon as he calls her, saying, “Han mein, magar wo, suno toh? Lekin main, kabse keh, tumne toh. The conversation was so casual that it was rare in Hindi cinema history. Finally, Aamir delivers another standout line, “Pitega saala.”
Don
In his third directing project, Farhan completely redesigned the title character portrayed by Shah Rukh Khan in the 2006 remake of Chandra Barot’s 1978 classic crime thriller. Don tackles Roma (Priyanka Chopra) and clutches her, whispering in her ear, “Mujhe jungli billiyan bahut pasand hain,” when she suddenly attacks him. I like wild cats.
Rock On!!
In addition to writing the dialogue for Abhishek Kapoor’s buddy musical, Farhan made his acting debut in 2008. His wife (Prachi Desai), who plays the character, begs him to reconnect with his inner rock star years after he left the band. “Maine 10 saal pehle ye zindagi chuni this. Han mujhe compromise karne pade, par compromise kaun nahi karta,” (If you don’t compromise, you won’t be able to make compromises at all. Indeed, ten years ago, I made that choice. Of course, I made some concessions—who doesn’t? ) Little did Farhan know that years later on Koffee with Karan, Ranveer Singh would even imitate the phrase “compromise kaun nahi karta.”
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara
When Imran (Farhan) first sees his distant dad (Naseeruddin Shah) in Zoya’s 2011 buddy road film, he questions him about why he was abandoned as a young boy. “Sorry tab kahiyega jab yahan se nikle please,” Imran points to his heart and leaves the room as his father apologises and asks if there is anything Imran can do for him at the end of the scenario.
