Alia Bhatt starrer film Gangubai Kathiawadi was adapted from Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai. And, the controversy started when Babu Ravji Shah alleged that the film is defamatory towards his mother. Moreover, the family members also stated that Gangubai Kathiawadi was a social worker, not a prostitute.

2. Udta Punjab

Udta Punjab faced massive controversy as the censor board demanded 89 cuts citing vulgarity, inappropriate language and references to Punjab. Producer Anurag Kashyap also hit out at CBFC chief Pankaj Nihalani and called him a ‘dictator’. Several industry veterans supported Kashyap and finally became one of the hit projects till date.

3. Gully Boy

Alia Bhatt starrer film Gully Boy witnessed major controversy as it was said that the awards shows were ‘paid, unfair and biased’. Moreover, netizens blasted the organizers for favoring only one movie over others. However, Gully Boy broke records after receiving the most number of Filmfare awards.

To this, a part of audience took offence at the portrayal of molestation on screen. Later, Alia shared her view on this, “I’m not somebody who is averse to criticism. I welcome all kinds of critique. But honestly, the film has been loved unanimously. There will always be some people who will say something different from what you think about the film. But that’s their take. I’m not going to tell them what they should feel. But the majority has loved the film and that’s what matters.”
