On the auspicious occasion of Onam, several celebrities have taken to social media to wish their fans. The festival of Onam marks the onset of the harvest season for Keralites. It is a ten-day festival that ends with Thiruvonam. It is said that on the day of Thirovonam the demon king Mahabali visits Earth. Even though a demon, Mahabali was perceived to be a good king. This is why people celebrate his return. Malayalis celebrate Onam with festivities such as Vallam Kali (boat races), Pulikali (tiger dances), Pookkalam (flower Rangoli), Onathappan (worship), and other similar ceremonies.
Amongst the Bollywood fraternity, Malaika Arora was one of the first celebrities to share their Onam celebration pictures with fans. Her mother Joyce Polycarp is a Malayali Catholic. Malaika celebrated the festival with her parents, sister Amrita Arora and her family.
“Our table is set… and finally after over 5 months we all together at my parents home n on this very auspicious day of Onam… thank u mom @joycearora for this lovely spread,” Malaika wrote alongside photos of the elaborate Onasadhya spread.
Actor Kamal Hassan also wished his fans on Twitter saying: “Onam marks the beginning of prosperity and happiness for every Malayalee around the world. It is one festival that transcends its own connotations. Priyappatta ellaavarkkum pon ona asamshakal. May life become colourful and joyful again soon.”
