Prominent Bengali actress Sreela Majumdar known for her phenomenal roles in movies and fan favorite took her last breath on the 27th of January, Saturday. The actress was 65 years old and passed away at her residence in Kolkata. The news was confirmed by her family. She is survived by her husband and son.
Late actress Sreela was a beloved artist of directors such as Shyam Benegal, Mrinal Sen and Prakash Jha. Paying tribute to the actress, Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee praised the actress for her remarkable performance.
The CM released in a statement, “It is a big loss for the Bengal film industry and we shall miss her stellar presence. My condolences to her family.”
The actress has done phenomenal roles in movies such as ‘Ek Din Pratidin’ (And Quiet Rolls the Don, 1980), ‘Kharij’ (The Case is Closed, 1982), and ‘Akaler Sandhane’ (In Search of Famine; 1981).
She has also done exceptional work in Shyam Benegal’s Mandi’ (Market Place, 1983), Prakash Jha’s ‘Damul’ (Bonded Till Death, 1985) and Utpalendu Chakraborty’s ‘Chokh’ (Eye, 1983).
The actress was last seen in the film Palan by Kaushik Ganguly. She was also known for dubbing for Aishwarya Rai’s voice in the film Chokher Bali (A Passion Play, 2003). She worked in a total of 43 films.
Sreela Majumdar has been suffering from cancer for the last three years. The actress’s sudden demise has sent shock waves in the entire Bengali film industry. Many actors and directors have offered their heartfelt condolences to the actress.
