The film Toolsidas Junior, starring Sanjay Dutt and the late Rajiv Kapoor, has just been released on OTT, bringing it to a broader audience. The film’s most notable feature is that it is late Rajiv Kapoor’s comeback picture, in which he returns to the big screen after a 30-year absence. Ashutosh Gowariker, the film’s producer, claimed that he has been a fan of Rajiv from the latter’s first film.
Gowariker reflected on Rajiv’s legacy and association, saying, “I had been a fan of Rajiv right from his first film Ek Jaan Hai Hum, followed by Ram Teri Ganga Maili and Zabardast. After Lagaan, I got an opportunity to meet him and since then we had been in touch over the years. I did not have the right material to cast him till Mridul came up with Toolsidas Junior and man, am I happy that Rajiv agreed to do the part. It was wonderful to have worked with him in the film. It is really unfortunate that he is not with us today to see the appreciation he is getting for his performance. Fortunately, we had already shown him the film before he passed.”
Rajiv Kapoor made his acting debut in 1983 with the film ‘Ek Jaan Hai Hum,’ and went on to star in films such as Ram Teri Ganga Maili, Aasmaan, Lover Boy, Zabardast, and Hum To Chale Pardes. However, after his father Raj Kapoor died in 1991, he became a producer, and in 1996, he made his directorial debut with Prem Granth, and acting became less important. After 30 years, it required a special story and a collaboration with Sanjay Dutt to bring him back to the big screen for his final film. Following Rajiv’s death in February 2021, Toolsidas Junior was aired on Netflix as his final and posthumous performance.
