Sooryanvanshi, the most awaited film will not release in Diwali, this year. Since March, the movie has been delayed due to the pandemic. There were speculations that the makers are planning to release in OTT platforms but later, they denied this news.
Reliance Entertainment has confirmed that Sooryavanshi, starring Akshay Kumar and Katrina Kaif in lead roles, will not hit theatres on Diwali even after theatres have been allowed to be reopened from 15th October.
Times of India reported, CEO of Reliance Entertainment, Shibasish Sarkar, saying that they are in no hurry to release their film. The reason cited by them was the fact that there was no confirmation on whether theatres were opening in all states including Maharashtra where Bollywood is based. The report quoted the CEO saying, “Theatres aren’t reopening in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu either. So, we shall wait and watch before deciding the release of 83 and Sooryavanshi. Look, even if theatres open in all states by November 1, we can’t release such a big film, doing only 15 days of promotion.” He further added, “Some film will definitely release in December. We shall watch the proceedings. We will know how many people came to see it. And who knows where Corona stands in India in December or November? What if cases are still high?”
The film’s initial release date was 24th March but it got indefinitely postponed due to COVID-19. The makers then revealed in June that the film would release on Diwali. Sooryavanshi, the continuation of the cop universe created by director-producer Rohit Shetty, was thought to be the 1st big-budget movie to release after the reopening of cinemas.
Cinemas were allowed to be reopened from 15th October at a 50% occupancy, as a part of Unlock phase 5 guidelines.
