The clash of two of the most anticipated films of the year, Gadar 2 and OMG 2, on Friday, August 11, made it one of the busiest days at the Indian box office. While Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel’s legendary jodi returned in Gadar 2 with a healthy dose of patriotism, Akshay Kumar took on the role of Lord Shiva in OMG 2 to support Pankaj Tripathi’s campaign for sex education in Indian schools.
Due to the tremendous histories of both Gadar 2 and OMG 2, all eyes were on the films’ opening day numbers.
But as the first day came to a close, Gadar 2 comfortably defeated OMG 2, and by a huge margin at that.
Gadar 2 has surpassed Shah Rukh Khan’s Pathaan to become the second-biggest opening of 2023, according to official figures. The Sunny Deol action movie made a staggering Rs 40.10 crore on its opening day at the box office.
However, despite the controversy it was embroiled in and the ‘Adults Only’ certificate, OMG 2 managed to generate Rs 10.26 crore on its first day, putting it in a respectable position.
OMG 2 has a positive word of mouth, in contrast to Gadar 2, which has a strong mass emotion. The availability of much more screens for Gadar 2 also plays a significant impact in determining the box office results.
Anil Sharma, who directed the first Gadar, returns to continue the story where the 2001 movie left off. Utkarsh Sharma plays the son of Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel in the second installment, which is set against the backdrop of the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
A video of Pankaj Tripathi’s son masturbating in class, on the other hand, causes him to file a lawsuit against the school administration and the entire Indian educational system. At this point, Akshay Kumar as Lord Shiva steps in to support and bless Pankaj Tripathi.
