Gangubai Kathiawadi, directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, has been the buzz of the town for a variety of reasons.
The film starred by Alia Bhatt is reportedly inspired by a segment from Hussain Zaidi’s book Mafia Queens of Mumbai about the woman Gangubai Kothewali, which has been one of the most awaited films of this year.
But the film stirred a huge controversy ahead of its release on 25th February 2022. Three petitions were filed against the film due to the use of the phrases Kathiawad, Kamathipura, and China in Gangubai Kathiawadi, according to media sources.
While the petitions were reported to be heard by the Bombay High Court, the petitions have been rejected. According to a new update, Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s film would be released without any edits.
For the uninformed, Maharashtra MLA Amin Patel and Kamathipura residents together filed a suit in the Bombay High Court demanding that the name of the locality be removed from the film. According to the petition, Gangubai Kathiawadi portrayed Kamathipura in a bad light, tarnishing the area’s reputation.
Patel’s petition also objected to the surname Kathiawadi’s use. It was used as a last name in Saurashtra, Gujarat.
On the behalf of Patel, Advocate Dhruti Kaptali told the court, “This film has shamed people of the entire vicinity. The women couldn’t write their address as Kamathipura.”
Another petition urged to modify or remove the word “China” from the film. The court has reportedly dismissed the third petition.
