Torrent Power Limited, one of India’s leading private sector integrated power utilities, has secured a major project after receiving the Letter of Award (LoA) from MP Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL). The company will set up a 1,600 MW coal-based ultra-supercritical power plant in Madhya Pradesh, awarded through a competitive bidding process at a tariff of ₹5.829 per kWh.

The project involves the development of a greenfield 2×800 MW plant under the Design, Build, Finance, Own, and Operate (DBFOO) model, with the entire capacity supplied to MPPMCL. Coal for the plant will be arranged by MPPMCL under the Ministry of Coal’s SHAKTI Policy. With a commissioning timeline of seventy-two months from the signing of the Power Purchase Agreement, the project marks a significant milestone for the company.

This upcoming facility represents Torrent Group’s single largest investment in the power sector, with an estimated cost of around ₹22,000 crore. The plant will be based on ultra-supercritical technology, known for its high efficiency and reduced carbon emissions when compared with conventional coal-based power generation.

The project is also expected to bring a major employment boost in the state, creating nearly eight to ten thousand direct and indirect jobs during construction and about fifteen hundred during its operational phase. Alongside its economic impact, it further strengthens Torrent Power’s capacity portfolio, which will now include 9.6 GWp of locked-in generation and 3 GW of pump storage. This portfolio is made up of 4.9 GWp of installed capacity, 3.1 GWp of renewable projects currently under development, 1.6 GW of thermal capacity and 3 GW of pumped storage capacity.
