Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd., a leading Indian manufacturer of rolling stock, has successfully delivered its first driverless, Made-in-India trainset to the Bengaluru Metro Rail Corporation (BMRCL) for the Yellow Line. The stainless steel, automated trainset is set to operate on the crucial 18-kilometer stretch connecting the Electronics City business hub to the rest of Bengaluru, marking a significant milestone for both the company and India’s metro rail capabilities.
The official handover event took place with the presence of Shri Manohar Lal, Honourable Minister for Housing and Urban Affairs, who joined the celebrations virtually. Speaking at the event, Shri Lal emphasized the transformative impact of metro projects on India’s urban mobility, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a “Viksit Bharat” by 2047. He commended Titagarh Rail Systems for their exceptional work in localizing manufacturing while delivering world-class trainsets.
“This delivery is not just a testament to the engineering excellence of Titagarh but also to India’s progress as a global hub for rail manufacturing. Bengaluru’s metro connectivity is a vital component of the city’s growth as a global IT and innovation hub,” said Shri Lal.
The automated trainset is a major achievement for Titagarh Rail Systems and a significant leap for India’s rail industry. This is the first metro train manufactured entirely in India for the Bengaluru Metro Yellow Line. Additionally, it is the first stainless steel trainset designed and produced by the company. The trainset’s automated features enable it to operate in Driverless (GOA4) mode, enhancing efficiency and reducing operational costs. It also incorporates sustainable features, modern interiors, and cutting-edge safety technology to provide a seamless passenger experience.
Umesh Chowdhary, Vice Chairman & Managing Director of Titagarh Rail Systems Ltd., expressed pride in the company’s role in supporting Bengaluru’s urban mobility vision. “This achievement is a reflection of our commitment to innovation and excellence. We are excited to contribute to Bengaluru’s journey of becoming a global city with world-class transportation systems,” said Chowdhary.
Titagarh is also set to deliver two additional trainsets for the Yellow Line by April 2025, with plans to ramp up production to two trains per month by September 2025, ensuring timely completion of the metro project.
This milestone further strengthens India’s position as a global leader in metro manufacturing and aligns with the government’s ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ (Self-Reliant India) initiative, which aims to boost indigenous manufacturing in critical sectors.
