Tata Power, one of India’s largest vertically integrated power companies, has launched the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab (EIIL) at its Mumbai headquarters, marking a strategic step toward strengthening India’s clean energy transition. The initiative is focused on using advanced research, data-driven insights and real-world experimentation to improve the quality, reliability and affordability of electricity services across the country.

The Energy Insights & Innovation Lab has been set up in collaboration with the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) and the International Growth Centre (IGC), a global research organisation based at LSE. Through this partnership, the Lab aims to address some of the most critical challenges facing India’s power sector, including managing peak electricity demand, integrating renewable energy at scale, and aligning power systems with India’s long-term net-zero goals.

The Lab was inaugurated by Dr. Praveer Sinha, CEO and Managing Director of Tata Power, along with Prof. Robin Burgess, Professor of Economics and Director of the IGC and EEE Research Program at LSE, and Dr. Jonathan Leape, Executive Director of IGC. The event was held in the presence of HM Harjinder Kang, Trade Commissioner for South Asia and British Deputy High Commissioner for Western India, as well as Dr. Chetan Ghate, Professor at the Indian Statistical Institute and IGC ISGH.

As part of the launch, Tata Power, LSE and IGC signed a memorandum of understanding to jointly develop scalable and evidence-based solutions for India’s power sector by leveraging global best practices and rigorous research. The collaboration is expected to generate practical insights that can be applied across policy, regulation and utility operations.

A key focus area of the Energy Insights & Innovation Lab will be the use of advanced analytics and behavioural insights to understand and influence electricity consumption patterns. The initiative will explore ways to shift or smooth peak electricity demand in urban households, helping reduce pressure on local distribution networks while maintaining consumer comfort and service quality.
