Praj Industries Limited (PIL), known for industrial biotechnology solutions, has entered a strategic partnership with Uhde Inventa-Fischer (UIF), a subsidiary of thyssenkrupp Uhde, to offer integrated technology for Polylactic Acid (PLA) production. This collaboration aims to provide a complete, efficient, and sustainable process for producing PLA, a biodegradable plastic alternative.
The joint technology covers the entire PLA production chain—from converting agricultural feedstock to producing various PLA grades. The process supports both starch- and sugar-based raw materials, including second-generation feedstocks made from non-food biomass, promoting circular bioeconomy practices.
The global issue of plastic waste, particularly from single-use fossil-based plastics, highlights the need for viable alternatives. PLA is gaining attention as it is compostable and derived from renewable resources. By combining PIL’s expertise in biotechnology with UIF’s strength in polymer processing, the partnership enhances the scalability and affordability of PLA manufacturing.
The integrated technology enables production of different lactic acid grades for applications in food and industry. Additionally, it allows for customized PLA grades used in packaging, textiles, and hygiene products, addressing the needs of multiple sectors.
With a global footprint, both companies are positioned to serve diverse markets and feedstock sources, supporting localized and sustainable PLA production. Their collaboration reflects a shared focus on reducing environmental impact and supporting responsible production practices.
This partnership between PIL and UIF represents a step toward making bioplastics more accessible and viable across industries, aligning with global sustainability goals and advancing the transition to greener alternatives.
