ONGC partners with BP Exploration to boost production at Mumbai High Field

The Oil and Natural Gas Corporation (ONGC) has partnered with BP Exploration (Alpha) Ltd., a subsidiary of BP Plc, as the Technical Services Provider (TSP) for its Mumbai High Field. This collaboration aims to address production challenges in the mature Mumbai High offshore field and unlock its potential using advanced recovery technologies. Discovered in 1974, the Mumbai High field has been a key contributor to India’s energy supply since production began in 1976. Despite various enhancement measures, production challenges have persisted, necessitating innovative solutions.

BP Exploration was selected through an International Competitive Bidding (ICB) process and will assess field performance to implement measures for improved reservoir management, facilities, and well operations. The company predicts a potential 44% increase in crude oil production and an 89% rise in gas output over the 10-year contract. Crude oil production is expected to increase from 45.47 million metric tonnes (MMT) to 65.41 MMT, and gas production from 24.94 billion cubic meters (BCM) to 47.22 BCM. This represents a combined oil and gas output growth of 60%, with visible results starting FY2026 and full-scale improvements by FY2028.

The initiative could generate additional oil and gas revenue of $10.3 billion and contribute up to $5 billion to the government exchequer through royalties and levies. Under the financial model, BP Exploration will receive a fixed fee for the initial two years, transitioning to a service fee based on incremental hydrocarbon revenue. This partnership highlights ONGC’s commitment to leveraging global expertise and cutting-edge technology to sustain energy production for India’s growing energy needs.
