Gujarat Gas Limited (GGL), India’s largest City Gas Distribution (CGD) company, has entered into a significant partnership with Waaree Energy through the signing of a Gas Sales Agreement (GSA) for the supply of Piped Natural Gas (PNG). Under this agreement, GGL will supply 50,000 standard cubic meters per day (scmd) of PNG to Waaree’s upcoming lithium-ion cell manufacturing facility located in Valsad, Gujarat.

This collaboration marks a step forward in the country’s journey toward clean and sustainable energy solutions. The lithium-ion plant is currently under construction and is expected to be commissioned in the fourth quarter of FY 2025-26. Once operational, the facility will support India’s efforts to reduce its reliance on imports of lithium-ion batteries—a segment crucial for electric vehicles (EVs), portable electronics, and Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS).

According to a report by CareEdge, India’s import dependence for lithium-ion batteries is projected to fall to 20% by FY 2026-27. As the demand for EVs and renewable energy integration continues to rise, localized manufacturing and cleaner fuel supply will play a key role in securing the energy ecosystem.

Waaree Energies Limited (WEL), part of the Waaree Group, is India’s largest solar PV module manufacturer with a total installed capacity of 13.3 GW, as reported by CRISIL. The group currently operates in over 20 countries and is now expanding into lithium-ion cell, hydrogen cell, and solar wafer manufacturing. Its partnership with Gujarat Gas will not only support green manufacturing but also contribute to lowering the carbon footprint of India’s fast-growing clean tech sector.

Gujarat Gas, operating under the aegis of the Government of Gujarat, supplies gas to over 22.67 lakh households, more than 4,000 industrial units, and runs over 828 CNG stations across 44 districts in six states—Gujarat, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh—and one Union Territory, Dadra & Nagar Haveli.
