Ampere Vehicles, the electric two-wheeler brand of Greaves Electric Mobility (GEML), is preparing to enter the competitive sub-₹1 lakh scooter market with its upcoming Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter. Positioned as an “ICE Breaker,” the new model is designed to directly challenge high-selling petrol scooters in India’s mass segment.
The Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter is scheduled for release in FY27 and has been engineered to deliver stronger performance while improving overall ownership economics. India’s entry-level scooter category, especially under ₹1 lakh, has traditionally been dominated by petrol-powered models offering practical city performance and quick refuelling. Electric scooters in this bracket have typically been associated with moderate torque and limited hill-climbing ability.
The upcoming Ampere scooter aims to bridge that performance gap. It is designed to deliver higher torque than many of the largest-selling ICE scooters in the segment, enabling quicker pickup and improved load-carrying capability. This performance focus is expected to make it more competitive with petrol scooters that currently dominate the category.
In addition, the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter is engineered with improved gradeability. Compared to conventional value EVs and typical petrol scooters priced below ₹1 lakh, the new model is intended to offer stronger hill-climb capability, enhancing rider confidence on steep flyovers and hilly terrains common across Indian cities.
Ownership economics remain a key focus. Petrol scooters in the entry-level category often involve ongoing fuel and maintenance expenses that increase total cost over time. The Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter aims to reduce running costs by up to 50% compared to ICE scooters. It also offers the advantages of home charging convenience, reverse mode functionality, and reduced maintenance requirements, strengthening its long-term value proposition.
Beyond performance and cost benefits, the scooter is positioned as a software-defined vehicle. It is expected to support Over-The-Air updates, enabling feature enhancements without physical service visits. AI and ML-enabled connectivity, along with remote diagnostics and prognostics, further differentiate it from traditional petrol scooters in the same price band.
With over 3 lakh vehicles already on Indian roads and more than 400 service touchpoints nationwide, Greaves Electric Mobility continues to expand its footprint. The addition of the Ampere 6th Gen Electric Scooter broadens the brand’s portfolio, targeting first-time EV buyers seeking petrol-like performance combined with the long-term benefits of electric mobility.
