Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation Ltd. (GMDC), a Government of Gujarat enterprise and India’s leading lignite producer, has received Environmental Clearance (EC) from the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Government of India, for its Lakhpat–Punrajpur Lignite and Limestone Mine located in Kutch, Gujarat. The approval marks a major regulatory milestone for the state-run mining company and strengthens its long-term expansion roadmap.

The newly approved mine has been granted a production capacity of 3.0 MTPA of lignite and 29.81 MTPA of limestone. This dual-resource approval enhances production visibility for GMDC and significantly strengthens its mineral reserves within Gujarat. The development further consolidates the company’s leadership position across both fuel and industrial mineral segments.

The integrated mining project is expected to play a vital role in supporting key industries such as power generation, cement manufacturing, and other mineral-based sectors. With rising demand for reliable fuel and raw material supply, the Lakhpat–Punrajpur project is poised to improve supply stability across Gujarat’s industrial ecosystem. The clearance also enables GMDC to move forward with project implementation in accordance with statutory and environmental compliance norms.

The Lakhpat–Punrajpur Mine forms a core part of GMDC’s broader expansion strategy focused on reserve augmentation, mineral diversification, and sustainable operational growth. By strengthening its lignite and limestone portfolio, the company aims to reinforce its strategic importance in Gujarat’s infrastructure and industrial development landscape.
